Miniature collectors — and collectors of miniatures — find satisfaction in the most unexpected places; here, an account of tiny rewards.
Their ranks are huge, their objects small as small can be. Miniature collectors have diverse goals, varying quality standards, and different motivating factors, but they are all in pursuit — however relaxed or fierce their methods of seeking — of under-sized items that are faithful copies of much larger things. A great deal can be said about the reasons some people (perhaps most) are so enamored of articles on a small scale. I am not quite sure of the cause of my own attraction to such items, nor do I care very much why I have that inclination. I am just intensely grateful that it is largely under control and that an idiosyncratic fulfillment coming my way once in a while is sufficient to keep me from wanting more than that.
Unforeseen joy from unlikely sources for miniature collectors
When I began designing greeting cards, although I realized that they would be a certain size (that is to say, quite a bit smaller than most, if not all, objects that might be depicted on the covers), I hadn’t truly visualized what the end result of that aspect would be — the dream of all miniature collectors, an endless supply of petite objects in perfect proportion. The cards themselves would turn out to be a source of secret delight for that aspect, separate and additional to any other benefits. On top of that, like the doubly reduced-scale things in the dollhouse meant for the dollhouse doll’s doll, the most delightful miniatures of any designs I sold were (unbeknownst to me) about to start making an appearance in my sales reports, bringing inordinate pleasure merely for their dimensions, unconnected to any commercial success they might represent.
As a final note, for the moment, on miniature collectors in all their dispositions, I will mention that a few of the items I have not been able to resist acquiring have also ended up with a purpose distinct from existing for their own sakes. See below.
